Peeling onions in the mess hall light,
Tears fall like old friends lost to time.
Feels like everyone I loved just died tonight,
And I’m left with this knife and this rhyme.
Then the boss barks, “Next—sack of spuds!”
Through the cracked window, a cat soaks up the sun...
While I’m stuck here, covered in mud,
Wondering if I’m the only one.
It matters—knowing you’re still out there,
Loving, remembering, holding me near.
God, it’s arduous and it is so unfair,
But damn, it’d be sweet if you were here!
Drinking port wine, loud and cheap,
With the boys in the bunkhouse haze.
We curse the suits, the lies they keep,
And the boss who steals half our days.
We talk of girls, of truth, of right,
Of justice that never comes through.
Then I black out before I reach the light—
Miss the toilet, miss you too.
It matters—knowing you’re still out there,
Loving, remembering, holding me near.
God, it’s arduous and it is so unfair,
But damn, it’d be sweet if you were here!
It’s hell—doing work that don’t fit my hands,
Leaving home for some empty field.
Trading all I know for shifting sands,
Just to feel something real.
Peeling onions, drinking wine,
‘Cause even this ache has its place.
It’s just part of saying goodbye
To the life I can’t retrace...
